Mantena's Special - Brown Rice (Mudi Biyyam or Dampudu Biyyam)

I haven’t updated this blog for long. Sorry for keeping you in wait. I have been real busy in my work since all these days and I hardly find enough time to cook and take pictures of the items needed for cooking. Any way today’s special in Mantena’s Kitchen is “Brown Rice”.

Brown Rice is considered to be one of the most nutritious and healthiest foods. If you are worried about your growing weight, feeling fatigue more often, want to stay away from diabetes, want to keep your cholesterol level down then brown rice is the right kind of food for you. According to Dr. Mantena Satyanarayana Raju every household must completely ban the use of white rice because it is the cause for all kinds of diseases. Don’t expect the government to wake up and do the job for you. By the time they wake up you won’t be there on the Earth to see that. Therefore every individual should wake up himself and abolish the use of white Rice and supplement it with brown rice.

Brown rice is a very nutritious and healthy product. For full details on the nutritional values and health benefits of eating brown rice visit: www.nutritiousfoods.blogspot.com. As of now let us learn how to cook brown rice in a few simple steps:

  1. Cooking brown rice is a little tricky and time taking process. Many people have trouble cooking brown rice in the beginning. Once you cook regularly you get used to it. You must bear this in order get the full nutrients it has. The first step is to clean and rinse the rice properly and soak in lukewarm water for at least half an hour or more. Since brown rice is a whole large grain with upper bran layer intact; it needs to be soaked in lukewarm water for better result.

  1. Here you must learn to add right amount of water to cook brown rice. For cooking brown rice take double the quantity of water to rice. For example: If you are cooking 2 cups of rice add 4 cups of water. Any thing less makes the rice hard to eat and anything more makes it messy.

  1. Now put on the stove and cook the rice on high flame for 5 to 10 minutes and then reduce the flame letting the rice cook in a simmer for another 20 minutes. It usually takes long time to cook when compared to white rice. Do not bother about the gas expenditure while cooking. Think about the benefits of eating brown rice. Because regular use of brown rice keeps you away from doctors and medicines.

  1. When the rice is cooked take off the stove and keep the lid closed for a while for better results.

  1. Your rice is now ready to serve. Serve it hot with any curry. Regular use of brown rice keeps you fit and healthy. Make a practice of eating brown rice regularly at your home and make your friends and relatives follow the same.

Hope you find this information useful. Keep watching the space for more updates.

Thanks in advance

Hello Santosh! Getting Mudi Biyaam in Hyderabad is quite easy. You can find it at any Rythu Bazar, super market, rice stores.

can u suggest me a method to cook brown rice in current cooker

The method is the same.

Hi Ram garu,

I've started eating brown rice, but looks like it's a bit hard on my digestive system, i.e. difficult to digest.

I've read some Ayurveda articles, please correct me if I'm wrong, and surprised to know that Ayurveda suggests eating basmati rice and preferably white instead of brown since they are easy on digestive system.

Please enlighten.. thanks in advance.

I did not understood what you mean by hard. Any way brown rice takes little longer to get digested. Let it be, what's wrong in being digested late? You never bother about digestion while eating biryanis and oily food in the functions, why bothering about brown rice? Trust me it makes no harm to your body, instead it will do all the good.

As far as your article on Ayurveda is concerned, Ayurveda is a medical science and think when a person have the medicine? When he is sick. So obviously sick people are not advised the food that is digested late. I hope you understood what I meant to say.

Hi Ram garu, thanks a lot for the reply.

- When I specified hard on stomach, I meant bloating, heaviness, slow digestion, uneasiness. These were based on 1 week experience, not the first day.

I completely understand the benefits of dampudu biyyam, I will try again to see whether my digestive adapts to it.

I don't want to sound harsh, but I completely disagree with your comment on Ayurveda issue.

Ayurveda means "The knowledge/science of life". If you think it is only for sick people, I define being healthy (the opposite of sick) as "fully functioning all organs in the body", which implies that almost 100% people on earth are not healthy and sick in some way.

In any aspect, whatever Ayurveda suggests is to improve your life comprehensively even-though you (think you) are healthy!!

Follow some of these instructions: 1. Don't try to swallow rice in hurry like you do with white rice. Take your own time and chew the food well. 3. Don't drink water while eating. Give a gap of 1/2 hour before food and 2 hours after food. 3. Soak the rice for half an hour before cooking and ensure that it is not half boiled.

You misread or misunderstood my point with regards to Ayurveda. I never meant that people don't fall sick. Neither I tried to deny what is said in Ayurveda is wrong. When will you take any medicine? When you diagnose some problem. Right? Will you take any medicine without being diagnosed any problem? Obvious not. When Ayurveda recommends to eat white rice, it obviously recommends to those whose digestive system is weak.

hi i stay in australia what is the english name for mudi biyam,is it brown basmati rice??
pls reply ASAP ,thanks

Mudi Biryyam is called Brown rice in english.

Hi, i have a doubt. Boiled rice will also be brown. Is it brown rice. What about rice used in kerala. Is it boiked or brown. I also heard thet brown rice should nt be washed. is it true?

Boiled Rice is not brown rice. Brown rice is un-husked rice and it looks like wheatish in color. The Kerala rice is a red variety of rice not brown rice. You can wash brown rice, no harm.
