Dr. Mantena's Special - Jal Jeera

Friends, the summer is at its peak and the temperature is 40 degrees and above in most parts of the country, 45 degrees and even 47 degrees in some areas. Many people have lost their lives due to dehydration. Every individual must make sure that he drinks 5 – 6 liters of water in the manner recommended by Dr. Mantena Satyanarayana Raju to keep oneself healthy. Children need special attention during summer. Parents should make sure that they drink enough water to keep themselves hydrated.

Whether young or old; people are attracted towards soft drinks available in the market which is not good for health. Instead of drinking soft drinks one has to develop a healthy habit of making good and healthy fruit juices and other summer drinks to keep one hydrated and cool.

In this connection I am presenting you a very refreshing, traditional and healthy North Indian Summer drink “Jal Jeera”. On a hot day, all you need is a tall glass of jal jeera. Jal jeera not only quenches your thirst but also keeps your body cool, increases your appetite and aids in digestion. This Ayurvedic energy drink is perfect to beat the summer heat and is also very easy to make and less time consuming. So let us now learn the ingredients and method to make it.

Preparation time     : 20 minutes

Serving                      : 5 nos.

Ingredients:

1.  Cumin Seeds                          -        3/4th tbs
2. Dry Mango Powser (Amchur)      -        1/2 tbs
3. Lemon                                    -        2 medium sized
4.  Mint leaves                             -        10 leaves
5. Coriander Leaves                      -        ½ Cup
6. Honey                                     -        2 tbs
7. Fennel Seeds                           -        ¼ tbs
8. Rock Salt                                -        ½ tbs

Method:

1. Dry roast cumin seeds and fennel seeds separately on a pan and set aside.

2. Add roasted cumin seeds, fennel seeds, dry mango powder and rock salt in a jar and grind it into fine powder. Rock salt is the prime ingredient in this drink but you can make it without rock salt also. In spite of the fact Dr. Raju is strict against salt, I recommend you to add little rock salt in this drink because it has numerous minerals apart from sodium. During summer we not only lose water but also various minerals through sweat. Since the drink is exceptional summer drink and is not made regularly, I don’t think there is any harm in using some rock salt in it. However, if you are truly health conscious and do not want to add any salt it is up to you.

3. Grind the coriander leaves and mint leaves into a fine paste adding little water. Pour the ground paste into a strainer and set aside the strained juice.

4. Add a liter of cold water from earthen pot to the strained juice and mix well. Add extracted lemon juice, honey and stir well.

5. Pour this drink in a glass and add 2 tbs of grounded powder and stir well. Your jaljeera is ready.
